U-19 team Dordrecht: Day 3 Belgium VS New Zealand

10/07/2011

Coaching the first-ever U-19 team in Belgium:

Sunday, 10/07/2011: Belgium VS New Zealand: (0-25)

This game is easily summarized: Harder, better, faster, stronger.

The guys again started motivated. their focus was: taking initiative and looking around (options)
But right away the New Zealanders took off with fast swimming and easy passing. This stunned the guys rithem so much that the few first goals were way to easy for NZ.

After some pep-talk they finally started to try to fight, to bad that most of the players are to tired and not in the right shape to help out. This means many open area’s for NZ to swim/pass to and easy ways te score again.

These guys are also so young and inexperienced in uwh that they can’t read the game or the refs right. Messing up the puck advantages, and not being able to quickly react to the refs signals needs to be changed as well.

The second half had some better moves. They guys started to try even harder (the ones who weren’t tired) and some of them actually stayed down. Therefore we were able to block the NZ game for a few turns. Making the NZ actually battle with us. This for the first time in this tournament. But we weren’t able to keep this up…

And once again we gave the two chances we had to come close/score a goal away. We had two times that we had a one-on-one situation @ their half, the only thing we needed were forward to help out.
The condition is something i can’t change, so we’ll focus on some of the smaller stuff right now (plenty of them there) so these guys don’t burn all their energy in futile action like now.

Next game today against the French, now it’s team-talking and resting time!
